The Wrecker


I’d read somewhere online this rather chilling account of how in Victorian times, children on the coast of Wales would scale up cliffs on stormy nights with little lights to trick passing ships into wrecking onto the reefs… then stealing the booty.
I was later to learn there’s no evidence these ‘wreckers’ existed at all and it could all be an old urban (industrial?) legend. But it I loved the story.. and it made me think of other, more fantastical mythological wreckers…

I love the idea of sirens/mermaids as agressive and pointless destroyers of ships and human lives - rather than the image of them as seductive maneaters. Kind of the way cats like to destroy things and push objects off the edges of tables for no apparent reason.
